After sending a pair of teams deep into the state field hockey playoffs, it's no surprise that the L-L League is well-represented on the 2009 Pennsylvania Field Hockey Coaches Association all-state squads.

Of the 89 players selected to the first, second and honorable mention squads in Class AAA, 19 are from the L-L League. Of the 83 players selected in Class AA, six are of the local variety. Coaches must be members of the association in order for their players to be named to the squad.

Earning berths on the big-school 30-member first team were Penn Manor forward Jill Witmer and midfielders Renee Suter and Katie Breneman, Warwick defender Amy Goldstein and forward Whitney Reddig, Manheim Central back Cassandra Wagner and Cocalico midfielder Jordan Page.

Topping the small school squad were first-team selections midfielder Laura Gebhart and defender Katie Robinson, both from Donegal. A total of 32 players were named to the first team.

Donegal back Olivia Leaman and Lancaster Mennonite's Danielle Peirson, who has experience all over the field, were tabbed for the Class AA second team, which totaled 29 members. Indians forward Jenna Hunter and Mennonite back Katie Andrews were among 22 players named honorable mention.

Manor goalie Carenna Neeley, midfielder Nancy Stehman and back Kelly Harsh earned spots on the Class AAA second team, which featured 40 players. Joining them were Elizabethtown midfielder Abby Fuhrman and Lampeter-Strasburg forward Jenna McHale and midfielder Jordan Long.

Hempfield forward Katy Fuhrman, Manheim Township goalie Amanda Hooven and Warwick midfielder/forward Bethany Ashworth also received second-team honors. E-town midfielder/back Mandi Shearer, Township forward Kathleen Morris and Solanco midfielder/forward Katherine Ault were among 19 athletes named honorable mention.

Witmer, Suter, Reddig, Page, Gebhart and Robinson were repeat selections to their respective first teams, while Wagner, Goldstein, McHale and Harsh were second-team selections in 2008.

PM won the Section One, L-L League and District Three Class AAA crowns before falling to eventual state champion Lower Dauphin in the PIAA Tournament quarterfinals. The Comets were the 2008 state champs.

Donegal won its first solo Section Three title in 2009, having previously tied for the championship. The Indians, who were the L-L tournament runners-up after winning the league title in 2008, captured the Class AA title in the district tournament, and made their farthest trip through states before falling in the semifinals.

The L-L was also well-represented on the academic all-state squad.

The Class AA selections were Donegal's Katie Robinson and Lancaster Mennonite's Andrea Beck, Carli Bowman, Heather Gochnauer, Nicole Leaman, Celina Nissley and Kristen Stoltzfus.

The Class AAA members were Solanco's Mary Atkins and Alyssa Baughman; Manheim Central's Taylor Fellenbaum, Heather Haldeman, Danielle Landis and Ashley Ream and Conestoga Valley's Shanna Hess, Kerri Clement and Steph Latschar

Also, Warwick's Amber Kreider, Taylor Miller and Jocelyn Scillia; Hempfield's Kati Cooper, Laken Gehris, Jenna Stover and Brittany Troutman and McCaskey's Kristin Liebig, Katherine Pflanz and Cynthia Thomas.

Also, Elizabethtown's Jamie Dullinger, Abby Fuhrman, Megan Kishbaugh, Carley Rosenberger, Mandi Shearer and Paige Strayer and Ephrata's Alison Weaver, Tiffany Franck, Julie Stavarski and Samantha Wilt.
